Wasteful start to the week

Not the pretty looking tree, but I love the color!
So I thought that this week was going to be a perfect week to be consistent with my running. I was planning on running Monday and today, but of course it didn't go as I expected!! Monday I went on my solo run attempt to do the usual intervals going 1 mile down the trail and back. About 10 minutes into my run my body just shut down! My stomach was tumbling and grumbling making me nauseous so I turned around and headed home!! I was not happy!! I wish I could have pushed through it, but sometimes you have to listen to your body.

Oh I also registered for my FIRST 5k on Monday!!! I filled out the registration form, wrote out my check, and mailed it to MN!!! REINDEER RUN 2010 here I come on DECEMBER 4th!!!!

1st Registration!
Tuesday I went on my day-off walk around campus for about 25 minutes. I actually started timing how many minutes I walk a day from my house to campus and then to classes!! I was pretty surprised at how many minutes I spent walking around campus for each day. I think Tuesday ended up being about 40-45minutes of spaced out exercise that I didn't even realize complements my training schedule.

I can't stop taking pictures of these colors!
Today I had all the intentions of going down to the trail to run, but caught up with my running buddy to talk since I haven't seen or trained with her about a week and a half, because of her family emergency! We ended up going to Fleet Farm and sort of walked around the store, so that was the extent of our workout today, but it was a much needed get together to catch up! At this time it was dinner time so we headed to a Chinese buffet (I know, I know, Chinese buffets should not be on my diet plan, but we were indulging tonight!). Though I didn't watch my portions I only had one plate full of food, and a couple desserts! After the buffet we stopped at Caribou Coffee and for the first time I tried a White Chocolate Pumpkin Spiced Mocha (no whipped cream, my healthy choice for the night!). It was DELICIOUS!! I'll definitely have to get a few more since they're only seasonal! I had a pounding headache for half the day, so after popping 3 ibuprofens(sp?) I set out on a short 25 minute walk around campus. I figured it was better than nothing!

These are sooo comfy!
I'm winding down with a little blogging, and the scent of my pumpkin spice candle in the background along with my sweet slippers!! I <3 everything about fall: the seasonal scents, changing colors, crisp air, rustling leaves, and all the activities at local orchards!

My week minus Monday...all in ONE post!!

I knew it would happen eventually!! I've officially been bogged down with group projects and homework in all four classes!! So now I get to recap my week in a nutshell!

I'm lazy and use paper boats, so I don't have to do dishes
The last post I updated you with was on Monday when I was an overachiever and went running and then hiking right after my run! Tuesdays are my busy days where I work and have class from 10-6, so I never feel like doing much! Though I didn't feel up to doing ANYTHING I managed to cook up a box of Asian Helper Lo Mein (fast version of stir fry), which took 30 pain staking minutes(I only had a half of a pb&j sandwich at noon before class, and was at that point starving!), plus I only had 1 egg, so I didn't get the full effect. I managed to go on a short walk around campus that night, because at that point I was exhausted! Once I got home I quickly took a shower and hopped into bed :)

Wednesday's yummy "family" dinner!
Wednesday was when the sky opened up! I woke up to RAIN, RAIN, RAIN! Those days are the worst especially when you have to walk to class in the wetness(I guess I can't complain because I don't like carting around an umbrella!). I love Wednesdays because I have a 2 hour break after my 10am class until I go to work so I get to take a nap if I'm tired! I almost always take advantage of this because all my roommates are gone and I can re-energize for my shift at work! My roommates wanted to have a "family" dinner, so I volunteered to cook up one of my mom's recipes, Fluffy Rice and Chicken. It's super easy! All you do is mix french onion soup mix, milk, uncooked rice and dump it over thawed chicken breasts, cooking for an hour! I was supposed to go train on the trail but it was miserable so I decided to walk instead. I took about a 20 minute walk, but was SOAKING wet and decided to head back!

Puddle at the end of my parking lot!
Thursday the weather didn't cooperate any better! Honestly there was FLOODING all over southern MN and WI, so bad that some highways were closed off because they were impassable! I went for a short walk in the rain(AGAIN!) and was miserable, so I only lasted about 25 minutes. I came home from sorority activities and my roommates wanted to watch a movie. We watched The Killers, which was really cute, but it was way past my bedtime (midnight to be exact), which is late for me when I get up at 6:30am! Usually I'm in bed by 10:30 or earlier! I was exhausted come Friday because I didn't have any time to take a nap after classes since my mom came up for the day! We went for lunch at Red Lobster(love their biscuits), and then went shopping. I was supposed to run that night, but I only went for a 17 minutes walk because my roommate wanted to watch a different movie and I figured that I walked the mall, plus it was still kind of drizzly.

So happy to see this!
Love all the fall colors!
Today I slept in, which was much needed, and was busy running errands! Well running was on my list since I hadn't done it since Monday, so I headed down to the usual trail! I think I should come up with a name for the trail, so that it sounds more exciting when I can say, "I'm going to meet so and so!" I'm still doing the 2 minute intervals just because I feel like I need to take it slow and just work up the intervals in a couple weeks. I'm planning on stepping up the intervals next week to 2 minutes, 3 minutes. I went the usual mile down, mile back and the time was 28:27:76, which I thought was good considering I hadn't been down there since Monday. Well more running tomorrow and I'm going to stick to my running routine this next week! I finished all my homework, so I should be free to do LOTS tomorrow!!!

Bad Case of the Mondays...Not SOOO Much!!!!

Usually I have a pretty bad case of the Mondays every week, but today was actually quite swell! I went to bed nice and early yesterday and was ready to go today! My 8am class was canceled today so I got to sleep in an EXTRA 30 mins! I was still up at 7am, but I was ready for action!
Gotta love the fall color!
Yay I made it!
I went for my run today down at the trail! It was a solo run because my running buddy had a group meeting, so it was a little challenging to keep at it. Today I decided that I would run just shy of 2 miles and I did just that! The weather was just right, not too hot, but not too cold, though I got very warm in my hooded sweatshirt plus it felt heavier compared to my Under Armour shirts! My total time, though I was dragging was 24:40:21.

Tower hidden behind trees
On to the more exciting part of the night!! I went back out to Hoffman Hills with my roommate and a friend!! Remember my failed attempt Failed Hoffman Hills Adventure back in August! Tonight was the perfect night! The mosquitoes were barely there, though I did have to swat a few, and the trail was somewhat short! Come to find out on the way back to the car we had taken the most difficult path by seeing the post with the sign warning us laying next to the trail in the brush! The trail was pretty hilly, but what do you expect with a name of Hoffman Hills?! Well lets just say that all my training had not prepared me, especially since my usual trail is all flat! I was wiped after the last hill and sweating bullets, but I couldn't resist going up on the 60 ft observation tower! IT WAS AMAZING!! You could see for miles around the rural recreation area! With the splash of the trees that had been turning fallish, it was so spectacular! Fall is one of my favorite seasons, so I'm looking forward to going back up there when most of the trees have turned! It would also be gorgeous in the winter with all the white!! OKAY enough gushing! This excursion took us about 40 mins total, so I figured that my slacking during running was made up for!
View from tower...AMAZING!
Another AMAZING view!

My next run is scheduled for Wednesday, this time with my running buddy!

Wow...there's actually time to breathe!

So it's been a few days since my last post! And you can probably guess why...I took 3 days off last week and I will never do it again!! I took Wednesday off because it was pouring rain (I know it's not an excuse but I had a ton of homework!), Thursday I had an excursion to the Twin Cities for Booty Cruise(you had to win tickets, and it was full women and male dancers, kinda like Chip N Dales and it was craziness), then Friday I had to wake up early to drive about an hour and a half to make it to my 8am class(on 4 hours of sleep). After my class Friday I was done for...I slept about another 3-4 hours skipping my run with my running buddy! And of course all these extra activities were on top of homework, classes, and work!
My stainless steel water bottle from Old Navy!

I had a great weekend! Friday, after my "napping" my running buddy and I drove to the Cities to see Vicki Gunvalson from the Real Housewives of the OC! We stopped to go shopping at the mall to kill some time and I actually bought something (this is new because I usually never have extra money to spend being a poor college student!). Vicki was super nice and has written a book about how she started her own business and it's booming! Yeah both Rebecca and I didn't stick to our eating plans because we ate at Leeann Chin's and were stuffed after! Though I skipped the pop and had lemonade!
Gum art at the Mall of America...YUCK!

I did make it a point to run on Saturday though I was dragging along! I promise to myself that I will not take 3 days off in a row EVER again! I decided to do the 2 min intervals of walking and jogging because I didn't want to overwork myself! Well actually I walked about 8 minutes on the way back to my car, but hey I was still out doing something! Though I felt like it was never going to end (the mile down and back) I was surprised to see that I had done that in 29:38:10! Pretty good for the condition I was in! Today I also went for a quick 25 minute walk around campus, and I was loving the weather. At first it was a little chilly but isn't that what we've all been waiting for all summer?!

Hopefully my running buddy is up for our weekly training session tomorrow! I'm starting to enjoy the break the running gives me from my other commitments like homework! It's my time to breathe, or be out of breath I guess, but either way I need to commit myself to my goal and keep reminded myself that I need to make time for it!

When life gets busy...RUN!!

So it's been a few days! School is rapidly eating away at my free time to go running! I feel so overwhelmed with all these group projects and assignments happening...why can't it be summer still?! Professors think that you have all this time to do their homework, when in reality you have 4 other classes shoving things down your throat too. Well it's time to stop making excuses! I still went running yesterday with my running buddy, though we were running very late, but it doesn't matter because still went!! I saw this video over on Miles to Run's blog and all the excuses in the video are sooo true! Everyone has used one of these and they ARE excuses, but nothing that's going to stop you. We shouldn't take excuses for granted because there are people that would love to get up and RUN but they can't because of a disability.

Mud, Mud, Mud!
Yesterday my running buddy and I went on our usual intervals, though we are supposed to be walking 2 mins, running 2 mins, walking 3 mins, running 3 mins. Because we've both been so busy we decided to just do 2 minute intervals all the way since we didn't feel like we were ready for the 3 min intervals yet. I love the trail we train on, but it leaves my shoes with this gravel/muddy mixture that gets tracked all over my floor when it gets home. And of course I'm too lazy to clean them up with a stick!

I went for a short walk today, about a 34 minute break from my homework! It's very important for me to walk in order to relieve my stress, so I'm glad that I got to get away for a bit. The activity and kids around campus was a little overwhelming having people walking around and smoke in the air. It wasn't the walk I was hoping I could have, though I did enjoy the crisp weather! Fall is my favorite season because I'm always hot, so these temps are right in between hot and cold! Plus I love the changing leaves!
This has been my life saver!

I'm still battling that bad blister on my left heel and my homemade "bandaids" (I put a real bandaid down, then duck tape over the bandaid) have been holding up pretty well. Duck tape is the only way it will stay on, lol!! I just started putting A+D Topical Ointment on it the other night, so hopefully that can speed up the healing process.

Well I should be heading to bed! I have an 8am class tomorrow and it's Business Finance(like accounting) so I need to be well rested in order to comprehend and survive! Happy Running!!

If I could turn back time...If I could find a way!

Me and my running buddy with our Bondi Bands!
As I reminisce about my Friday run, I feel great for keeping up with my training schedule. The interval training has been somewhat harder for me to get used to, but its that way because I've had sorority recruitment every night this past week and its just exhausted me! I ran three times (like the plan calls for) during this busy week, though all the sessions were mentally challenging. And to top it all off it was the same week for school starting. Now being a busy college student and wanting to balance everything is a MAJOR challenge! Well thankfully for me recruitment is done and over, so I will have all the time in the world to train, do homework, and relax (for a little bit!).

My Friday run was perfect! I had about a 4 hour break after classes until I had sorority things so I met up with my running buddy at our usual trail and headed out! We went our usual distance (1 mile down, 1 mile back) and was surprised at how well I could do the intervals. The exact intervals are run 2 mins, walk 2 mins, run 3 mins, walk 3 mins. My mind didn't want to accept the fact of running longer intervals though I did overcome my mind telling me to stop running and walk. Our time was great! We shaved off a little over 3 mins from our previous time and ended with a total of 31:53:30.

I feel guilty because I didn't go for a walk tonight like I planned! That's what influenced the name of this post because I wish I could turn back time to earlier tonight so that I could have gone on a short walk! Since recruitment has drained me socially, emotionally, and physically its probably a good idea to just take it easy! I will resume my running tomorrow on my own and will be meeting up with my running buddy on Monday!

What do you do to make sure you get your run in for the day????

Hip Hip Hooray for training, recruitment, and first week of school!

This week has been super duper busy with school starting, sorority recruitment every night, and my training schedule! I managed to squeeze in my run after class and before the event tonight! I felt like I was racing against time like all a sudden I would be running and then I would be late for sorority stuff. It was so weird to run when I had things happening after it(usually my day is finished and I have all the time in the world to relax after a workout).

Still didn't get any homework today which isn't really that surprising since I'm only taking 12 credits! YAY senior year! Sorority recruitment will be done on Saturday, so I will be able to resume my normal schedule of consistency.

My "Bandaid"
I did some solo training today down on the usual trail, which was sort of scary thinking about those horror stories you hear, but all was well. I actually passed about 10 people so I felt really safe. The interval schedule was to run 2 mins, walk 2 mins, run 3 mins, walk 3 mins, doing both 2 times. My left heel was killing me because I wore some black high heels last night and didn't realize they were too small, which cut up my heel pretty bad! My genius idea of a bandaid was putting a crappy bandaid under a piece of duck tape! Haha talk about a real college "bandaid"(though it did stay!). My final time ended up being 28:26:78! Getting better each time!!

Rockin my Jammin Jungle Bondi Band!
I have a training session with my running buddy tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully she's been keeping up on her running as well! It always feels better when you have someone else there pushing and encouraging you to do better! I'll keep you updated!

Last Day of Summer :(

These are my books, ugh!
Tomorrow is my last first day of school ever (well unless I go onto grad school later)! I'm a SENIOR IN COLLEGE!! I can't believe that time has passed so fast! It finally hit me when an advisor from a group I was in freshman year was in shock that it has been four LONG years! Saying that I'm a senior brings on a whole new meaning since I am unsure about my future and just hope that this year is enjoyable! I feel like school just creeped up on me and I'm no where near ready! This next week we have recruitment events for my sorority every night, so that will make the days fly by! The consistent schedule will be nice though and somewhere in between I will fit in my training!

The start of my Bondi Band collection, YAY!
Anyway onto my training! I slacked again, just not as bad as Sunday night! I ran about 1.8 miles around my neighborhood here in 19:55:20 at school and boy was it different! There was so much traffic and commotion around it was sort of overwhelming. Another thing is that I get kind of self conscious when I'm running because I'm not used to people driving since most of my training is done on the trail. Though it took me some time to get used to the new route, the weather was perfect. Nice. Crisp. Enjoyable! No aches and pains, just need to work on hydrating myself more.

I love Bondi Bands! I just ordered two more last week and I can't wait to get more! I have a variety of patterns because it makes dressing up for my workouts more fun :)

Ah Labor Day Weekend with some, fun!

<3 My feet will love me <3
My own stopwatch!
So as I was saying I got a chance to get to the sporting goods store. Well Kohls first for the running shoes and sports bra, then onto Scheels for some an Under Armour long sleeve shirt, a pair of Champion capris and some running underwear. I've been battling the dreaded wedgie while training, so I figured I should solve the problem. The pair was super comfy because it didn't even feel like I was wearing anything! I'll definitely be buying some more! I bought my first pair of "real" running shoes!!! I bought a pair of Asics Gel Kanbarra. They were on sale for $49.99, so I thought that was a pretty good investment. I stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up my own stopwatch for only $9! With all my purchases I should be well equipped to keep up with my training! I know what I will be asking for for Christmas(gift cards to sporting goods stores)!

No more wedgie!
For my workout tonight...let's just say I sort of slacked! The usual distance I would have run is 2 miles, but I slacked and only went about 1.2! Time was 17:38:22. I know its bad, but the chili from dinner (again) was weighing me down making me not want to do ANYTHING! I knew I hadn't completed the training session as I should have and I feel guilty though it is the holiday weekend! Excuses, excuses! I'll get back on track Tuesday since I will be back at school and on the usual trail with my running buddy.
Love these shirts

Other than getting some new running goodies my weekend has been pretty chill! I'm loving this R&R right before the chaos called college starts! I have to keep reminding myself that I need to make time to train no matter how busy my schedule gets! I'm dedicated to this goal and I will accomplish this!

Bananas, Car, Training...Oh My!

This weekend I'm enjoying a little bit of R&R in my hometown before college starts next Wednesday! My weekend is already packed with activities with family, friends and food...the only thing missing: my training for my 5k! I managed to squeeze my workout after my home cooked dinner of chili (ugh that really weighed me down later in my run!).  I felt so bloated since I usually eat after my workout sessions.

Right next to a busy neighborhood road
I did the usual 2 miles total, but on a new path in my neighborhood. The weather was much chillier than it has been in past training sessions, so I think it was a shock to my body! I definitely felt like I was huffing and puffing much more, plus there was a slight incline for a portion of the path (ha, and I asked my dad for a flat path!). The wind almost prevented me from even attempting my workout! It was so strong and could feel the resistance the whole way! I could feel it in my shins, but they managed to cooperate. For some reason I was feeling a little more self conscious I think because the usual trail is more secluded and this path was right next to a busy neighborhood road. I ended up with a great time though of 27:04:22 (real stop watch time with the seconds).

I've already nicknamed it Stella
My parents finally bought me a car!! After living 2 hours away at college without a car, they decided it was the right time to get me a car considering I will be graduating this May and no more pick me ups from them! They actually got a really good deal because it was my cousin's car from Montana. It's a 2000 Saturn LS2 bought for $1800, so it was definitely worth it!!! I can't wait to be able to drive myself to and from home to school and then all around my college town! I owe my roommates rides for all the times they've carted me around, lol! THIS MADE MY DAY!!! I can now say that for the first time in 3 years I will be taking myself back to school in MY OWN CAR(ok, well it's in my mom's name, but still EXCITING!)

Yummy banana chips pre-dehydrating
Now onto the bananas part of the title! I was trying to come up with some quick snacks that I could grab on the go when classes start and saw banana chips at Wal-Mart. Well me being the cheap and broke college student, I wasn't going to pay $8-$10 for a medium sized container! Then I remembered that my dad owns a dehydrator and thought I could save myself some money by making my them. All I really had to do was cut the banana and put them on the machine's trays before plugging it in! They will dehydrate for 12-16 hours and then be ready to eat. I snuck a few after about 4 hours and it tasted just like warm banana bread! Can't wait until they're ready to chow down on!!!

Have a lovely Labor Day weekend! Enjoy the time spent with family, friends, and food...I know I will!

Short and Sweet

Sorry for not having any pictures! I make it a goal to bring my phone so that I can document my training and to be honest it felt unusual not snapping some scenery pictures.

Training went well today! The weather was very cloudy and crisp today, making it a perfect day to run. Because the trail is packed gravel, it was a little slippery so running was sort of exhausting having to focus on no slipping when there's so many other things to think about (breathing, time). My running buddy and I were set to work hard today since we won't be getting any training together over the weekend.

We did the same distance as the past 2 weeks (1 mile down, 1 mile back), but I was ecstatic to learn that we had shaved off 1 minute and some odd seconds. The total time was 31:38, compared to Tuesday's time of 32:23!! This is sooo exciting that our pace has picked up and hopefully in the next week we will venture further than a mile down the trail!

That's about all for now! I'll have more to share from my weekend training! Also I can't wait to get some new running gear!! It's sort of like an incentive to work harder and keep up my motivation!

Embracing the lifestyle of a step at a time :)

Just a quick little walk for fun :)

I got to see the first star of the night!
Safety comes first on my walk
Ahh, the weather gods finally gave us a break! It must have been around 70 degrees when I headed out meaning I could thoroughly enjoy my short walk with the cool fall like breeze! I was on my own for training tonight, though it wasn't interval training, but I have decided to go on short walks to keep up my stamina and just enjoy the scenery in between my training sessions with my running buddy. It was a quick 30 minute walk around campus since I felt like I couldn't just sit around and do nothing. I started out around 8pm when it was starting to get dark so I figured I should stay around lit areas, just because I wouldn't feel comfortable down on the usual trail! I've read too many murder stories of young women getting killed since the trails are so secluded. After my walk I did some lunges and squats (after reading that these will strengthen the leg muscles and prevent knee problems) and did my normal stretching.

Notice the soles wearing out toward the toe area
I took a look at my shoes tonight and noticed the sole was starting to wear down to the insides, ugh! I've only had these shoes for about a month and a half. These shoes are ones I picked up at Target for $24, so I guess I will have to invest in a new pair of "real" running shoes. I'm waiting until this weekend when I can get a free moment to get to the sporting goods store. Still don't know what brand I'm going to go with, I guess whatever is comfortable. I realize that good running shoes can get expensive, but its all about embracing the lifestyle :)

Well tomorrow I continue my interval training with my running buddy! I just hope that the mosquitoes and weather can behave themselves to benefit me!
